Grid side: the "ballast stone" for stable power supply

Peak shaving and frequency regulation

In the modern power grid with severe fluctuations in electricity supply and demand, BESS has become the core means of peak shaving. When the peak electricity consumption comes, the energy storage system quickly discharges to supplement the power gap; During off peak periods, excess electricity is charged and stored to smooth the load curve of the power grid. In California, USA, the Moss Landing energy storage project (400MW/1600MWh), which will be put into operation in 2023, reduces approximately 1 million tons of carbon emissions annually by participating in grid peak shaving, while also lowering the demand for new thermal power units. In terms of frequency regulation, BESS, with its millisecond level response speed, is more than 10 times faster than traditional synchronous generators, effectively suppressing grid frequency fluctuations. The energy storage system deployed by a German power grid operator has effectively controlled the frequency deviation of the regional power grid within ± 0.05Hz, significantly improving power supply stability.

Delay investment in upgrading the power grid

In urban areas with rapid load growth, BESS can replace some of the investment in expanding transmission and distribution equipment. A community in New York has deployed a 5MW/10MWh energy storage system to meet the demand for load growth in the next 5 years, avoiding the $20 million investment required to build a new substation. The energy storage system reduces the peak load of the power grid and reduces the demand for transmission line capacity through "peak shifting and valley filling", providing a more economical transition solution for power grid upgrading.

User side: A 'weapon' for enterprise energy conservation and emergency support

Peak valley electricity price arbitrage

Industrial and commercial users can use BESS for peak valley electricity price arbitrage, which can significantly reduce electricity costs. A manufacturing enterprise has deployed a 2MW/4MWh energy storage system in its factory area, charging during valley hours and discharging during peak hours, saving over 3 million yuan in electricity bills annually and shortening the investment payback period to 3-5 years. Through the intelligent energy management system, enterprises can dynamically adjust their charging and discharging strategies based on real-time electricity prices, further enhancing economic benefits.

Emergency power supply and power guarantee

In places such as data centers and hospitals that require extremely high power continuity, BESS has become an ideal backup power source. A certain ultra large data center is equipped with a 10MW/20MWh energy storage system, which can maintain the operation of core equipment for more than 30 minutes in the event of a power outage, ensuring that data is not lost and business is not interrupted. In areas prone to natural disasters, the combination of BESS and distributed power sources can build independent microgrids to ensure the basic electricity needs of residents. The energy storage microgrid deployed after the Fukushima disaster in Japan provided critical power support such as lighting and medical care to thousands of households during power outages.

Renewable Energy Synergy: Enhancing Clean Energy Consumption Capacity

Smooth fluctuations in wind and solar power generation

The intermittency and volatility of wind and solar power constrain their large-scale grid connection. BESS can absorb excess electricity in real time and release it when power generation is insufficient, achieving smooth output of renewable energy. In a million kilowatt wind solar energy storage integration project in Gansu, the energy storage system reduced the output fluctuation rate of wind and photovoltaic power from 30% to within 10%, improving the grid's ability to accept clean energy.

Realize 'zero wind and light abandonment'

In areas with abundant wind and solar resources but limited power grid capacity, BESS can store excess electricity and reuse it. After a wind farm in Inner Mongolia was equipped with an energy storage system, the wind curtailment rate decreased from 25% to below 5%, and the annual power generation increased by over 50 million kilowatt hours, significantly improving the utilization rate of clean energy. As the cost of energy storage decreases, integrated wind solar energy storage projects will become the mainstream solution to address the issue of renewable energy consumption.
