MECC Supports Mali’s Green Power Development With Advanced Microgrid Project

Aug 18, 2026 Leave a message

Recently, MECC has officially signed a microgrid project contract with a well‑known cement plant in the Republic of Mali. MECC delivers an advanced energy‑storage microgrid solution for the local cement plant to support efficient and green power consumption. The project integrates a 6.9 MW / 16.7 MWh energy storage system, photovoltaic modules and diesel generators, and adopts MECC self‑developed zero‑second switching technology. It marks another major breakthrough for MECC in green power and energy‑storage microgrid sectors.

Project Highlights: Flexible, Green and High‑efficiency Energy‑storage Microgrid

This commissioned energy‑storage microgrid solution is tailor‑made for the Malian cement plant. It combines the 6.9 MW / 16.7 MWh energy storage system, intelligent energy management system, solar PV modules and diesel backup generators to build an efficient and flexible power system. The system can supply sufficient power support during peak‑demand periods, effectively reduce reliance on conventional diesel power generation, and accelerate local energy transition toward low‑carbon operation.

Key Technical Pain Points

Industrial microgrid deployment for cement production in West Africa faces two prominent practical challenges.

First, frequent transient power disturbance and power‑source switching shock. Cement manufacturing features continuous high‑power production processes. Conventional transition between solar‑storage output and diesel backup generators brings switching delay, voltage sags or surges. Even short‑time power fluctuation will trigger equipment tripping, halt kiln production lines, and cause considerable economic loss for the cement plant.

Second, volatile solar irradiance and diesel‑storage‑PV multi‑source coordination difficulty. Mali has abundant solar resources yet suffers from strong intermittent solar output caused by cloud movement. Without precise collaborative control, excessive diesel generator idling or frequent start‑stop cycles will occur. This leads to high fuel consumption, shortened generator service life and failure to maximize renewable energy penetration.

MECC Professional Solutions

To eliminate production interruption risks brought by power‑source switching, MECC applies proprietary zero‑second seamless switching technology. Real‑time detection on voltage, frequency and phase status of each power source is implemented at millisecond level. When PV or storage output cannot satisfy load requirements, the system completes mode transfer instantly without power outage or voltage oscillation. Critical cement‑kiln loads keep continuous operation so as to avoid unplanned production shutdown and related financial losses.

For multi‑source coordination among photovoltaic, energy storage and diesel units, the self‑developed EMS serves as the core dispatching unit. The EMS collects real‑time PV generation, battery status, load consumption and diesel‑generator operating parameters. It dynamically sets priority logic: maximize PV power for daytime production loads; store surplus solar energy into the energy‑storage system; discharge batteries to cover demand at night or during solar dips; trigger diesel generators only under extreme heavy‑load conditions. This strategy minimizes frequent start‑stop and idling of diesel units, cuts fuel expenditure, raises renewable energy utilization rate and protects the service life of diesel equipment.

Technical Advantages: Seamless Switching and Intelligent Management

Zero‑second seamless switching technology

Instant transfer between different power sources guarantees non‑interrupted power supply without voltage fluctuation. The technology eliminates blackout risks existing in traditional systems, ensures continuous and stable operation of cement production lines, and improves overall operational reliability.

Optimized coordination of photovoltaic and energy storage

PV modules supply renewable power to the cement plant during daytime. Energy storage takes over power supply at night or under heavy‑load conditions. It maximizes renewable‑energy consumption and lowers dependence on diesel generation.

Intelligent Energy Management System (EMS)

Through remote monitoring and regulation, EMS intelligently allocates loads and optimizes operation of storage and power‑generation assets. It improves overall energy‑use efficiency and reduces operational expenses.

Project Progress

The project is advancing steadily. Site survey and technical‑agreement communication are scheduled to be carried out soon. Through thorough on‑site investigation, the engineering team will further refine the technical scheme according to the cement plant's actual operating conditions, ensuring smooth implementation and future commissioning.

Project Impacts and Significance

This microgrid project delivers tangible local value for Mali's cement industry. It curbs high diesel‑fuel costs which have long burdened local heavy‑industry enterprises. Reliable zero‑second switching protects continuous cement production, mitigating economic losses caused by power instability. Higher solar penetration cuts on‑site carbon footprint and promotes green transformation for local manufacturing.

From an industry perspective, this project sets a replicable reference for heavy‑industry microgrid solutions across West‑African regions with weak grid infrastructure. It validates MECC's capability to deliver tailor‑made PV‑storage‑diesel hybrid solutions for continuous‑process industrial customers.
