Energy storage container is an integrated energy storage device that integrates battery system, converter system, monitoring system, etc. into a standard container for easy transportation and installation. It can be seen in many new energy projects. What is energy storage container clustering? In fact, it is to combine multiple energy storage containers together to form a larger scale energy storage cluster.

Why do we have to do this? This is to meet the higher demand for energy storage capacity and power in different scenarios. The energy storage capacity and output power of a single energy storage container are limited. For example, in some large-scale grid side energy storage projects, a large amount of electricity needs to be stored and quickly released to stabilize the grid. At this time, a single container is not enough. By using clustering technology to connect multiple containers, the overall capacity and power of the energy storage system can be greatly increased, just like gathering small water droplets into a large lake, which instantly strengthens the power. Moreover, multiple containers working together can improve the reliability and flexibility of the energy storage system. When one of the containers malfunctions, the others can continue to work, ensuring that the entire energy storage system does not collapse.

Why do energy storage containers need to be clustered?

Improve energy storage efficiency

After energy storage containers are clustered, centralized management and collaborative work can significantly improve energy storage efficiency. During the charging and discharging process, a cluster composed of multiple containers can achieve more optimized energy storage and release. For example, when there is a large amount of electricity that needs to be stored, the clustering system can allocate storage tasks reasonably based on the status of the batteries in each container, making the charging process of the batteries more efficient. Like an efficient logistics warehouse, each container is a storage unit, and with unified scheduling management after clustering, the storage and handling (charging and discharging) of goods (electricity) become more orderly, reducing unnecessary losses and improving overall energy storage efficiency.

Enhance system stability

The stability of the energy storage container system has been greatly enhanced after being clustered. When a single energy storage container fails, other containers can immediately top it up, playing a role in mutual backup. Taking the energy storage project of the power grid as an example, if the battery of a container has a problem and cannot be charged and discharged normally, other containers in the cluster can automatically adjust their output power to maintain the stable operation of the entire energy storage system and ensure that the power supply of the power grid is not affected. This redundant design is like adding multiple safeguards to the system, even if individual links have problems, the entire system can still operate stably, greatly improving the reliability and stability of the energy storage system.

Adapt to large-scale energy demand

With the rapid development of the energy industry, the demand for large-scale energy in industries such as industry and power grids is increasing day by day. The clustering of energy storage containers can adapt well to this trend and meet the demand for large-scale energy storage. In large industrial parks, a large amount of electricity is needed to ensure the continuous operation of production and to cope with changes in electricity consumption during peak and off peak periods. After the energy storage container is clustered, it can provide sufficient energy storage capacity to store a large amount of electricity during low demand periods and release it during high demand periods, stabilizing the power supply to the park. For the power grid, in the case of large-scale integration of new energy, clustering energy storage containers can store excess electricity generated by new energy generation, regulate the balance of power supply and demand, enhance the grid's ability to absorb new energy, and ensure the safe and stable operation of the power grid.

Unveiling the clustering technology of energy storage containers

Connection and Communication Technology

The first step in clustering energy storage containers is to achieve physical connection. Specially designed electrical connection components such as cables, busbars, etc. are usually used to connect the battery systems, converter systems, etc. of each container together, ensuring stable transmission of electrical energy between the containers. Just like building blocks, these connecting components are the connectors between the blocks, tightly combining independent energy storage containers into a whole.

In addition to physical connections, communication technology is also crucial. Real time information exchange is required between various energy storage containers to achieve collaborative work. Common communication methods include wired communication and wireless communication. Wired communication, such as fiber optic communication, has the advantages of fast transmission speed and high stability, and can quickly and accurately transmit large amounts of data. Wireless communication is more flexible, with wireless technologies such as Wi Fi and 4G/5G, making it convenient to use in scenarios where wiring is difficult. Through these communication technologies, the operating status of each energy storage container, such as battery level, charging and discharging power, temperature, and other information, can be timely summarized to the central control system. The central control system then schedules each container based on this information, just like the command system in the military, which communicates to understand the status of each soldier and issues combat instructions.

Energy Management System (EMS)

The Energy Management System (EMS) plays a core role in the clustering of energy storage containers and can be regarded as the "smart brain" of the entire energy storage cluster. Its main task is to conduct comprehensive real-time monitoring, energy scheduling, and optimization of energy storage containers after clustering.

In terms of energy allocation, EMS will develop the optimal charging and discharging strategy based on factors such as the demand of the power grid, the state of charge (SOC) of each container battery, and the current electricity price. For example, when electricity is low and prices are cheap, EMS will control energy storage containers to prioritize charging and store excess electricity; During peak electricity consumption and high electricity prices, EMS will discharge energy storage containers and transmit electricity to the grid, achieving "peak shaving and valley filling", helping users reduce electricity costs while also alleviating the pressure on the grid.

In optimizing the operation of the system, EMS will also consider the performance differences of each container, allocate charging and discharging tasks reasonably, avoid excessive charging and discharging of a certain container, and extend the service life of the entire energy storage system. Moreover, when there are abnormal fluctuations in the power grid, EMS can quickly respond, adjust the output power of energy storage containers, maintain the stable operation of the power grid, and ensure the reliability of power supply.

Safety protection technology

Safety is a crucial aspect that cannot be ignored in the cluster application of energy storage containers, and a series of advanced safety protection technologies have been adopted for this purpose.

In terms of fire protection, automatic fire alarm systems and fire extinguishing devices are usually equipped. Once signs of fire are detected inside the container, the alarm system will immediately sound an alarm and the fire extinguishing device will quickly activate. For example, using perfluorohexane fire extinguishing agent has the advantages of high fire extinguishing efficiency, strong volatility, and safe insulation, which can quickly and effectively extinguish fires without causing secondary damage to equipment. Some energy storage containers also use gas-liquid two-phase aerosol fire extinguishing technology, which intensifies the fire extinguishing agent through high-pressure gas to form micron sized atomized particles, accurately extinguishing, cooling, and continuously suppressing battery boxes that experience thermal runaway fires.

Temperature control technology is also very important. Energy storage containers generate heat during the charging and discharging process. If the temperature is too high, it can affect the performance and lifespan of the battery, and even cause safety accidents. Therefore, temperature control devices such as air conditioning and cooling fans are generally installed to control the temperature inside the container within an appropriate range through cooling or ventilation. Some high-end energy storage containers also adopt intelligent temperature control systems, which can automatically adjust the working status of temperature control equipment based on the real-time temperature of the battery, achieving precise temperature control.

Electrical safety protection is also essential. By installing grounding devices, leakage protection switches, overvoltage and overcurrent protection devices, etc., safety issues caused by electrical faults can be prevented. The grounding device can introduce the leakage current into the ground, avoiding electric shock to personnel; Leakage protection switch can quickly cut off the circuit when leakage occurs; Overvoltage and overcurrent protection devices can protect equipment from damage in the event of abnormal voltage or current.
