Q: What is the principle behind them? How do they work?
A: They operate based on a combination of photovoltaic technology and traditional air conditioning principles. The photovoltaic panels on them convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. The AC power drives the compressor, which is the heart of the cooling system. The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant, causing it to change state and absorb heat from the indoor air as it evaporates. The now-cooled air is reincorporated into the room, while the warm refrigerant is pumped outside to release the heat through the condenser coils. In essence, they harness solar energy to power the cooling process, reducing reliance on grid electricity.
Q: Are they suitable for all climates? Can they work in cloudy or rainy weather?
A: They can function in a wide range of climates, but their performance may vary. In sunny regions, they operate at peak efficiency as they can harvest ample solar energy. However, during cloudy or rainy days, their power generation from the solar panels decreases. But many modern ones come equipped with energy storage systems, typically lithium-ion batteries. These batteries store excess solar energy generated during sunny periods and can provide power to keep them running, albeit at a potentially reduced capacity, depending on the battery size and the length of the inclement weather. Additionally, some units have the option to switch to grid power when solar energy is insufficient, ensuring continuous cooling.
